The Big Picture for the Week of February 14, 2010

Last night during the Olympic coverage there was a commercial for the US Census telling us to fill it out because it will help the town where you live.

How is this possible? There is no money.

Since when has that been a problem? The gov is so far off course that they think giving out money is the reason that gov was created. Sad.

There is plenty of money. Make no mistake about that. The issue is how is it going to be parced out. That's all. For example, are we going to spend some on social needs or are we just going to continue the path of the military industrial complex and trickle down socialism?

Why does the US Census waste money on expensive ad agencies to create strange ads, in the name of creativity, to encourage us to fill out the form? While only a minor annoyance, this is reflective of a much larger issue in this country. Enjoy the music captain, I think we've hit an iceberg!

I don't know anyone who is disgusted by the government's largess, yet it gets worse every year. Why? Because it is o.k. for their representative to bring home the bacon for their district, but no one else. Multiply that attitude by 435, and we get the government we deserve. All the census will do is shift the boundaries the bacon is passed out in, nothing more.

Well, democrats are currently in charge (though less so than they were). Here is evidence that democrats are stupid'er than republicans or independents:

"Seventy-nine percent of Democrats said they support permitting gay men and lesbians to serve openly. Fewer Democrats however, just 43 percent, said they were in favor of allowing homosexuals to serve openly. Republicans and independents varied less between the two terms."

Even if there WEREN'T money, the existing money distribution can change. And you could get more representation in government, which could of course get you more more of the pie.

I want accurate population statistics, and commercials are cheaper than hiring 10m people to go door to door.

They ran that during the SUPER BOWL too.

There may not seem to be money but, there is political power in having a large population to represent. Money follows political power. Every person will be counted with the diligence shown to counting every preciou chad.

@Stephen Drone - Commercials cheaper than going door-to-door? Think not. Money spent on people is re-injected into the economy. Money spent on the "Portrait of America" commercial series would have been better put to use in the furnace of Americans. They serve NO purpose whatsoever.

Spending money on cenus commercials just shows how out of wack our government is. This is being done as a social progam. If people don't know to fill out the census paperwork with out commercials then they do not deserve to be represented.

Financial de-regulation has destroyed American.

It has nothing to do with the census, health care, blah blah..

Both Dem and GOP are captured (bribed) by wall street to turn a once "free market" into a captured market control a few banks.

It is these banks that basically print money for themselves and then dole out some to politicians to make sure no regulations get passed.

that was "job creation"....for the
advertising agency and the TV station that ran the ad???

I am getting bored with the influx of Big Bank-conspiracy and socialist crap that has been finding its way into the normal intelligent commentary on your blog.
